About The Event

This Month's Speaker Topic:

“Love that Dirty Water: The Charles River Then and Now”

Presentation Description

The Charles River is an iconic natural feature of life in Greater Boston. Decades ago it was a fetid waterway clogged with trash and polluted with industrial discharges and raw sewage. Today it is hailed as one of the cleanest urban rivers in America. The cleanup of the Charles is proof positive we can do extraordinary things to improve our environment when we put our minds to it. Emily will talk about current threats to the Charles and how modernizing water management is critical to not only further cleanup, but also protecting people and property from the weather extremes of our changing climate.

Emily also serves as an elected City Councilor in her hometown of Newton Mass. She holds a BA in philosophy from the University of Vermont and a Master’s Degree in Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School.
